Tempeh bacon is so delicious, healthy and easy to make! It only takes about 15 minutes. Although it helps if you happen to be making soup at the same time so you can steam/boil the tempeh in the broth, it’s not necessary.Tempeh Bacon Recipe
1 8oz slab of tempeh sliced 1/4″ – 1/8″ thick
2 tablespoons oil (divided)
2 teaspoons soy sauce (can use gluten free tamari or liquid aminos)
2 teaspoons liquide smoke
pinch hickory smoked salt
1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
a few grinds of fresh cracked black pepper
Boiling water or broth (to steam the tempeh)
First, cut the tempeh in half and steam or boil it for 5-10 minutes (using a broth will impart a deeper flavor to the tempeh.)
Remove the tempeh and slice as thin or as thick as you like (the thinner the cut the more likely it will crumble.)
Heat a frying pan to medium high. Add 1 tablespoon of oil. When the oil is hot add the tempeh and let sear for 2-4 minutes or until the tempeh turns rich golden brown. Add additional tablespoon of oil and flip the tempeh and continue to cook for 2-4 minutes.
Turn off the heat and add the soy sauce and liquid smoke. Flip/stir the tempeh so all the liquid is absorbed. Add the nutritional yeast and toss/stir until all is incorporated. Finish with pepper and serve. If crispy bacon is what you desire then throw the bacon back to the fire and bake in the oven until ready to serve. This tempeh is great in a sandwich or even mixed in the bread!
